The Helminthology section occupies the 2nd floor of the building IMTSP and II different laboratories dealing with research in the areas of epidemiology, imunopatogenia, diagnosis and molecular aspects of infectious and parasitic diseases. Adds the LIM-06 “Immunopathology of schistosomiasis” Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP and Gastroenterology laboratory Tropical, the Department of Gastroenterology of the FMUSP.

Are your purposes:

  1. Training of researchers and professors in related fields, through programs of postgraduate studies of the IMTSP and Faculty of Medicine of the USP.
  2. Development of diagnostic techniques of infectious and parasitic diseases, especially of schistosomiasis, Strongyloides stercoralis, toxocariasis and blastocistose, especially molecular diagnosis and immunodiagnostic, as well as the study of autoimmune diseases of the digestive system, liver and metabolic diseases molecular aspects of hepatitis B and C
  3. Development of research dedicated to the elucidation of mechanisms imunopatológicos of the above infections
  4. Of higher training and technical support in the activities described above,
  5. The Helminthology laboratory is accredited by the Foundation for Administrative Development (FUNDAP), with an opening in the Personal enhancement Program health-PAP, since 1983; with the program Immunopathology and Molecular Biology of parasitic infections (LIM 06).

  • Development and implementation of methods and techniques to study and diagnosis of infectious diseases.
  • Study of imunopatológicas and immunological changes in leishmaniasis and malaria.

Group 2 area: Immunopathology and diagnosis of parasitic diseases
Lines of research:

  • Pathology of infectious and parasitic diseases
  • Diagnostic methods of schistosomiasis in lower endemic areas
  • Investigation of diagnostic techniques for identification of s. stercoralis infection in immunocompromised patients.
  • Characterization of humoral response on experimental infection of mice by larvae of Toxocara canis in isolation or concurrent with other helminth and protozoa.
  • Behavior changes in host plants parasitised.

Group 3-area: Pathology II
Lines of research:

  • Immunopathology of experimental schistosomiasis: detection of antigens by imunoeletrônica (clusters of Hamsters)
  • HIV-infected patients: a histological, ultrastructural and various bodies-HISTO-chemistry of patients undergoing biopsies.
  • Paracoccidioides brasiliensis: in situ hybridization in human and experimental disease.
  • Kidney transplants: detection of antigens related to Cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex and adenovirus in cell acute rejection, tubular necrosis and interstitial nephritis.
  • Mitochondrial permeability transition “correlates with the process of apoptosis.
  • Study of adrenal steroids as evolutionary markers of infection by the virus of human Imunodeficência.

Group 4-area: Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Lines of research:

  • Autoimmune diseases of the digestive apparatus
  • Metabolic liver diseases
  • RNA detection genotyping of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in patients with chronic liver diseases. Clinical and histopathological aspects and response to interferon.
  • Mutants in hepatitis: mutations in the region and NS5A responses to interferon in patients with chronic infection by HCV genotype 1b. Mutants resistant to lamivudine in patients with chronic HBV infection.
